2024 is set to be an important year in conservation and saving the earth. For Earth Day 2024,EARTHDAY.ORG is unwavering in their commitment to end plastics for the sake of humans and the planet, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040. To meet this goal, we as stewards of the earth can make a difference thru education, taking tangible actions and demanding change.
- We can start by educating our friends, family and community. For example, participate in a local clean up or Earth Day event, share these free toolkits on your social media platforms, or reach out to us at OURF to host an Outreach Event.
- Take simple, tangible actions. Planting trees and recycling are actionable ways we can make a difference.
- By planting trees, we are creating new habitats for animals and reducing global warming. Plants and trees help the environment by releasing oxygen and cooling the earth. Orang Utan Republik Foundation helps by planting trees to reforest habitats close to orangutans, you can gift a tree for just $10.
- Recycling is important because it saves energy and reduces waste. By recycling plastic, bottles and paper we are protecting the ecosystem and wildlife. It also prevents pollution which helps clean the earth and causes less greenhouse gasses.
- Demanding change is paramount. We need to use our voices and buying power to steer companies into changing their packaging and controlling waste. EARTHDAY.ORG has created the Global Plastics Treaty. The Global Plastic Treaty is an opportunity for the United Nations and Governmental Organizations to prove the health of the planet and its citizens take priority over an industry threatening the health of every human on Earth. - Saying NO to fast fashion is paramount. Since fast fashion is cheap to produce and is sold at low prices, it makes it easy to cave in to societal pressure and constantly consume new clothing, wear it once and throw it out. According to EARTHDAY.ORG “100 billion garments are made annually, 87% ending up in landfills or incinerators and only 1% are recycled. Toxic textile processing pollutesfreshwater systems harming connected ecosystems, and each year 200 million trees are razed for cellulosic fibers imperiling biodiversity. 69% of clothes are made from crude oil and washing them accounts for 35% of the ocean's microplastics. Microfibers are in the food chain, our air, our soil and appear deep in our organs and our bloodstreams threatening our existence”. These numbers are mind boggling but believable as we are all familiar with how prevalent online shopping has become and the power of pressures to keep up with trends on social media. Use your voice to sign this petition urging the Biden Administration to act now.
Your role is VITAL. As a voter, consumer and community member you matter! We at OURF know the weight of the world’s challenges can feel overwhelming but if we all do a little, the sum is significant and we can inspire each other. Take action now and sign one of the petitions.
